Techniques for Making Better Portrait Shots

——–(with the camera on automatic)

@ the McReavy House Museum of Hood Canal, Union (WA)

9 am – 5 pm, Saturday, May 14

Enjoy a Saturday at the McReavy House learning how to use four simple steps to take sharp, well-exposed, interesting pictures of people using your camera’s automatic features and your own good judgement.

  1. Put camera on Auto mode. These vary from the simplest point-and-shoot camera to the fanciest DSLR. In the morning everyone will set the automatic features specific to his or her camera, such as: Auto Focus, Auto Exposure, Auto Flash, Auto ISO, Auto Sharpen, Auto White Balance, Auto Noise Reduction, Auto Program Modes
  2. Put self on Manual mode. There are many things to think about before doing Steps 3 and 4. This will improve your photographs immediately.
  3. Point camera.
  4. Press shutter.

Combine all 4 steps during morning and afternoon photo sessions to come up with some bad, average, and excellent pictures (no worries – all photographers take a lot of bad pictures). Throughout the day the instructor will guide everyone through discussions of a variety of portraits taken by different photographers, including photos that class participants take before and during class.

At the end of the day everyone will be taking better pictures of people.
